Liverpool bucket UEFA Super Cup after Champions League

Liverpool edged over Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday on penalties when the standard game time ends with a no result draw 2 – 2 (5-4) at BJK Vodafone Park in Istanbul, Turkey.

Liverpool edged past Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final 5-4 on penalties after the game ended in a 2 – 2 draw at BJK Vodafone Park in Istanbul, Turkey.

The match featured two English sides, Liverpool, the winners of the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League, and Chelsea, the winners of the 2018–19 UEFA Europa League. For the first time, VAR was used in the match.

From the start of the game Chelsea were determined to find an opening against their arch rivals and in the third phase of first half Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud unwrapped the thriller, scoring in the 36th minute off an assist from Christian Pulisic.

But Liverpool started the second half strongly and Sadio Mane equalised in the 48th minute after Roberto Firmino unselfishly squared the ball to him. After that both teams had chances but couldn’t take them and the game went into extra time.

Again Liverpool started well and got their reward when Firmino set up Mane for his second goal in the 94th minute to make it 2-1 to the Reds. Liverpool looked to be on course for victory, but a penalty to Chelsea in the 101st minute saved the game for the blues.

This is Liverpool’s fourth Super Cup title; the Reds last won in 2005.

Lets have a look at the penalties, how it all went;

First penalty from Liverpool was taken by the Firmino and he scored successfully. Jorginho from Chelsea also scored. 1-1

Second from Liverpool taken by Fabinho who scored fruitfully. Barkley from Chelsea levelled against the rivals. 2-2

Third one was spectacular and thrilling as Origi managed to put in, but Kepa did get his hands to it. Mount drilled has shot into the upper portion of the net. 3-3

Another thriller as Alexander-Arnold got his shot past Kepa’s gloves. And Emerson Palmieri scored his. 4-4

Finally the star footballer Salah steps up for Liverpool and scored. Chelsea’s Abraham’s shot was saved by the Adrian and Liverpool won their second major trophy in 2019.

This is Liverpool’s fourth Super Cup title; they last won it in 2005.
