The Cristiano Ronaldo Effect

Zinedine Zidane told the press that “It’s been a tough week, “We talked about how we had an opportunity this weekend and we took it.” Zidane reference the Real win over Barca. This hard-earned win gave the whites a chance to remain at the top of the table and finish it as a league winner.

Last night in Santiago Bernabeu Real Madrid won the El Clasico by beating rival Barcelona 2 – 0 and returning to the top of La Liga table which in turn might have saved their season as they ended their win – drought in the best way possible.

CR 7 (Cristiano Ronaldo), now Juventus star, was also watching from the fence as a whole heartedly Madrista, he not only supported his former club but also provided the Vinicius the most precious information which then enabled him to score in the second half.

On Saturday Zidane said that the El Clasico Derby would not decide who lifted the league trophy in May but a win for Barcelona could result in a five-point gap and might not be possible to close such a gap.

From the beginning of the clash Barcelona seemed keener to kill the game early and win it as they have done it in the past four games.

“The Madrid we faced in the first half was one of the worst I have faced at the Bernabeu,” said Gerard Pique. “I don’t say it as a criticism, we also have our problems, but we’ve missed an opportunity.”

First opportunity came to Barcelona when in 21st minute of the game an attempt missed by Antoine Griezmann, from the centre of the box which remained too high to even touch the polls. Lionel Messi’s rasping shot was saved by Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the first half.

Before this chance to Barca, Real Madrid lost two scoring chances in the 7th and 15th minutes of the game both chances gone to the sky from the feet of the Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos.

Second Half

In the 71st minute of the game Vinicius Junior’s right footed shot from a difficult angle on the left to the bottom left corner which was perfectly timed assist by Toni Kroos provided the breakthrough to the whites which was acclaimed as a confidence booster for the Madrid in the second half.

“The reality is we lost a lot of confidence with the ball,” said Setien. “We entered a nervous spell and that’s when the goal came.”

Then again in the stoppage time goal number 2 arrived by the substitute Mariano who remained successful in putting an end to the equalizing hopes of Barcelona. This goal was also a right footed shot from a difficult angle on the right to the centre of the goal this was assisted by Daniel Carvajal.

Thibaut Courtois and Marc-Andre ter Stegen made vigorous saves which kept the game at 0 – 0 and both teams had made tremendous efforts to stop the game over before the end of the first half.

However, Vinicius Junior and Mariano supply a winning run to end Madrid’s seven-match drought league run in this fixture as Zidane’s side moved a point clear at the summit.
